Guest Author Lisa Adams discusses Writing Short For Profit!

Author Tales Welcomes Lisa Adams!
Writing Short For Profit…

So what's the secret?

Romance is the number one genre seller! (It always has been and probably always will be.)

Characters drive romance! But there's more…

Traditional romances require what we call a "Happily Ever After." Some books will take you through to the wedding day, others will guide you to a commitment, and still others set up a scenario of a meeting and show you a willingness to proceed. The last is the one that leaves the reader to imagine the most and so many readers love that. (Don't believe me? Check out the short romances in Woman's World magazine every week.)

But how do you make money writing short romance?

To give you a hint, there are hundreds of women's magazines out there looking for romance stories to add. They know romance sells, and they want a chunk of the pie. If you can tell a good romance in 800-1500 words then you hold the keys to the money box with magazines.

Online websites for women also purchase romance story shorts. Some pay flat rates of anywhere between $10 and $50. While other sites pay per word .05 up to $1.00 per word. (Just for reference… Woman's World magazine does pay $1.00 per word for stories of 800 words. That's $800 for one short story!)

If magazines are not your thing, there are quite a few ebook publishers out there who offer flat rates for short stories to be included in anthologies. (Cleis Press, Roane Publishing, and Torquere Press to name a few.)

Then there are also those presses that pay flat rates or royalties for your story and treat it as a stand-alone book. (Secret Cravings Publishing, Breathless Press, and Decadent Publishing are those that come to mind.)

The point is… writing short seems to be the in thing at the moment. With people's lives getting busier and busier, a lot of women are choosing to read novellas and short stories versus full length novels. Because seriously… who has the time? We want to escape, but time is precious. I love when a full story takes me less than an hour to read. I feel fulfilled and happy and don't feel like I'm neglecting any of my duties. (Because you know how we women are about feeling guilty.)

If you are a writer… I encourage you to try some of the publications that I've listed above. You may find it unbelievable how easy it is to break in to this genre with good writing AND make money from it.

If you are a reader, but feel you don't have the time to read… I encourage you to look at some of the novellas that have been put out by some of the ebook presses I mentioned above. Secret Cravings Weekend Getaways come out every Saturday. Evernight Publishing's Romance on the Go comes out every Friday, and Breathless Press Flirts come out every Friday as well. You'll be amazed at how many can be read in a lunch hour.

Thank you for listening today and I hope that I have helped a few people!
